City Twinning : Coimbatore, India – Esslingen, Germany
Esslingen Coimbatore Association (Esscom) is found under the Societies Act, 1975 to facilitate the twinning between both the cities and was found in Nov 2008.
Tracing the evolution of the present city, native Coimbatoreans originated majorly from the farming community. The fertile black soil contributed to rich agriculture. Traditional cultivation produces maize and millet. Rice is the major crop grown here followed by Jowar, Ragi, Maize and other cereals. Coimbatore stands first in the cultivation of Bengal gram. Cotton, groundnut, potato, coconut and palm plantation flourished in the rural outskirts of Coimbatore standing tall and continuous alongside lengthy roads. Over a period of time, farmers began to cultivate banana and sugarcane as well.
