City Twinning : Coimbatore, India – Esslingen, Germany

Esslingen Coimbatore Association (Esscom) is found under the Societies Act, 1975 to facilitate the twinning between both the cities and was found in Nov 2008.


Renowned for its textile industry, Coimbatore naturally became the headquarters for textile machinery manufacture. Some of the best global textile and machine manufacturers hail from the Manchester of South India. The neighbouring town – Tirupur is the native for some of Asia’s largest garment manufacturing and exporting companies.

Pump and motor manufacturing is another major industry. History reveals the first motor in India hailed from a small engineering shop in Coimbatore. Today, this industry is a significant global player and largely contributes to the country’s economy.

Cast jewellery and machine made jewellery is exported and sold from Coimbatore. Over 40,000 goldsmiths and silversmiths are engaged in jewellery making, majorly as a family business. Coimbatore Gem and Jewellery Industries Pvt. Ltd was established by Coimbatore Jewellery Manufacturing Association.

More than 700 wet grinder manufacturers function in Coimbatore. Geographical Indication as “Coimbatore Wet Grinder” was given for wet grinders from Coimbatore and Erode in 2006.
