City Twinning : Coimbatore, India – Esslingen, Germany

Esslingen Coimbatore Association (Esscom) is found under the Societies Act, 1975 to facilitate the twinning between both the cities and was found in Nov 2008.


Coimbatore has always been a significant artery since the early 1800s. Today, the city has developed major links with other parts of the country by road, rail and air. Avinashi Road is a major artery road in Coimbatore comprising a part of NH 47 connecting to Bangalore and Chennai. Other highways NH 47 and NH 67 connect Kerala, central Tamil Nadu and Ooty. Gudalur connects Karnataka and Kerala.

Coimbatore Junction Railway Station is the central railway station for tourist destinations. Coimbatore Railways has a unique infrastructure and hosts circular railway. It is the second biggest revenue yielding station after Chennai.

Coimbatore International Airport is the 15th largest airport in India in terms of total aircraft movement, 18th largest for passengers handling and 13th largest for cargo handling. In Tamil Nadu, it is the second largest airport after Chennai International Airport in terms of passenger traffic and cargo. 6 domestic and 2 international airlines fly from the airport to major destinations and these numbers are expected to increase.
