City Twinning : Coimbatore, India – Esslingen, Germany

Esslingen Coimbatore Association (Esscom) is found under the Societies Act, 1975 to facilitate the twinning between both the cities and was found in Nov 2008.


Coimbatore is home to many known sports personalities and has been the epicenter of Indian Motor Sport and made its mark internationally. Often referred to as ‘India’s Motorsport Hub’ and the ‘Backyard of Indian Motorsport’, Coimbatore is one of the first cities in India to have a Formula 3 circuit. S. Karivardhan designed and built Kari Motor Speedway which has earned a distinct status in the Indian go-kart circuits. Professionals from Coimbatore represent India in F1 racing and international circuits. Narain Karthikeyan, India’s 1st F1 driver hails from Coimbatore. Other renowned F1 racers from the city include J. Anand and V.R. Naren Kumar.  India’s largest tyre manufacturer, MRF assembles Formula Ford cars in Coimbatore with J. Anand, the former F3 Champion and the company Super Speeds.

Nehru stadium, initially built for football also hosts hockey, cricket and athletic meets. The multi-purpose stadium was built in 1971 and can accomodate 30,000 spectators. Coimbatore Golf Club emerged as a prime sports center for golfing enthusiasts and industrialists. Located on the outskirts of Coimbatore, the club has all the amenities for a world-class golfing experience with great terrain, added attraction of exotic tropical trees, peacocks, and more than 50 species of birds.

Multiple sports academies and stadiums for indoor sports, badminton and rollerskating has opened up a plethora of opportunities to students interested in these sports.

The most loved sport, Cricket, is a passion in Coimbatore. Both professionals and cricket loving non-professionals manage to indulge in the sport between their quotidian activities.
