Genesis of the name “Coimbatore”

City Twinning : Coimbatore, India – Esslingen, Germany

Esslingen Coimbatore Association (Esscom) is found under the Societies Act, 1975 to facilitate the twinning between both the cities and was found in Nov 2008.

A glimpse of today’s Coimbatore city scape is a reminder of its genesis back when it was blanketed by green cover (farms) and forests. The tribal community, Irulas, lived in jungles and made their homes in little villages around the river Noyyal. The name ‘Coimbatore’ was believed to have evolved from Irulas’s king-Kovan living in Puthur, Kovan Puthur (meaning, the place of Kovan). Another myth says the name Koniammanpudur was coined from the ruling goddess, Koniamman of Coimbatore.

During the East India Company’s control in Coimbatore, the city name was renamed as Coimbatore.
